First let me start out by saying I have grown an obsession over Devy leagues. It has everything I would ever want in a fantasy league and I will admit that I am extremely late to this party. One of the first things I have noticed after doing my Devy research for the upcoming season is the absence of one of College Football’s most talented quarterbacks. He is Texas Tech quarterback Patrick Mahomes. Let’s talk about some of Mahomes background information before I go into his film and abilities.

Patrick Mahomes is a two-sport athlete for Texas Tech University, playing both football and baseball. He stands at 6’3 219 lbs and runs a 4.62 40 yard dash according to his Hudl page. In 2014, Mahomes played in seven games at Texas Tech and showed incredible promise as a freshman by throwing for 1,547 yards with 16 touchdowns. He took over the starting duties in 2015 as a sophomore and had quite the season for the Red Raiders. Mahomes threw for 4,653 yards, 36 touchdowns with a 63.5 completion percentage. Next year’s quarterback class includes Deshaun Watson, Brad Kaaya, Joshua Dobbs, Chad Kelly, Gunner Kiel and much more but Patrick Mahomes has not been on that radar for some reason. Quarterbacks that have no business being drafted in front of him are and I am here to stop that. He has the potential to be a Devy steal in leagues across the world and in no time this Texas Tech Red Raider should be a household name.

If you mixed the playmaking ability of Russell Wilson and put it inside Colin Kaepernick’s body you’d get Patrick Mahomes. He is one of the best athletes at the quarterback position in the whole country. Mahomes does things on a football field that we do not see from an ordinary quarterback, the gif above proves this. Against LSU, Mahomes was running for his life and had many houdini moments during this game. He threw for 370 yards, four touchdowns and showcased his true playmaking ability. He is not just your ordinary air raid play making quarterback who is a product of the system, he is much more than that.

Mahomes sometimes struggles with his accuracy and that is due to poor footwork. You’ll see him throw off one foot, off his back foot and stuff like that a lot. The gif above shows what he is capable of. This throw is one of the best I saw during the whole 2015 College Football season, you do not see throws like this thrown let alone completed. Mahomes shows glimpses of absolute brilliance from the pocket, against Iowa State, Baylor and LSU he threw some gorgeous throws all around the field. He has an elite arm that allows him to throw touch passes, bullet passes and gorgeous throws like this all around the field. Outside of Deshaun Watson nobody has the mixture of arm talent and athleticism like Mahomes.

This play above is pure beauty if I am being honest. Mahomes shows off the elite arm strength that he already possess  As a sophomore he had NFL ready arm, there are tons of throws he made that some NFL QBs have no shot of making. Mahomes throws this ball on a rope to Jakeem Grant that would be caught for a touchdown. Quarterbacks with this size, speed, playmaking ability and arm talent are rare, we do not see them often. By the end of the 2017 season he has the chance to be the second rated quarterback in the 2017 draft. Off measurables alone Mahomes should be going much higher in dynasty devy drafts but he is not.

After talking to a few Dynasty league writers I have realized that Mahomes is grossly underrated and needs to be picked earlier in Devy drafts. I made sure to snag him within the first three rounds of my Devy draft because I could not let anybody else have him. He is the most talented QB outside of Watson in the 2017 QB class. Mahomes announced that he is not playing baseball this season so he can fully focus on football. That will probably end up being the best decision of his life because he is special and the world will take notice sooner or later.

Here is 11 minutes of Mahomes at his finest.
